Our Specialized 12-Step Program

Twelve-Step programs have helped millions of people achieve and maintain sobriety. The principles behind Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA), such as honesty, humility, accountability, service, spiritual connection, and community, are not just tools for recovery; they represent a way of life that addresses the underlying conditions that contribute to addiction.

At Above All Else Recovery, we incorporate and support 12-Step principles and community throughout our residential program. While we are not exclusively a 12-Step rehab and do not impose this program on clients for whom it may not be suitable, we have a strong belief in the value that the 12-Step tradition offers. We ensure that participation in this program is genuinely available, actively supported, and integrated into the daily rhythm of our program.

Why We Value 12-Step Recovery

The 12-Step model has an unusual quality among recovery frameworks: it asks people to look inward honestly, to take responsibility, to make amends, and to be of service to others. These are not just sobriety strategies. They are a curriculum for living, one that addresses the character defects, the shame cycles, the isolation, and the distorted thinking that sustain addiction long after the physical dependency is cleared.

We have seen what happens when people engage genuinely with the steps, not as a box to check but as a real practice of self-examination and change. Something shifts. The story a person tells about themselves begins to change. The compulsive patterns lose their grip. The community of the rooms provides a belonging that substance use was often trying to approximate. This is what we want for our clients.

12-Step Integration at Above All Else Recovery

Meetings in the Community
We attend AA and NA meetings together as a program community. We provide transportation to meetings in Costa Mesa and the surrounding Orange County area. We encourage clients to identify home groups, to get phone numbers, and to begin building the relationships with the broader recovery community that will outlast their time in residential treatment.
We support clients who are ready to begin working the steps. We help connect clients with potential sponsors from the local 12-Step community and create space within the program for genuine step work alongside clinical therapy and other programming.
12-Step recovery is, at its core, a spiritual program, one that asks people to connect with a Higher Power of their own understanding. This aligns deeply with what we believe at Above All Else Recovery. We are not a religious program, but we believe spiritual health is central to lasting recovery. The 12-Step tradition’s openness to many understandings of a Higher Power makes it accessible to people from many backgrounds and traditions. The point is not theology, it is the inner work of surrender, honesty, and connection that transforms a person.
One of the most distinctive and effective practices in 12-Step recovery is service, the deliberate action of showing up for other people, not because you feel well enough, but because it is how you get well. Service pulls people out of self-absorption, builds genuine self-worth, and creates the kind of community bonds that sustain sobriety under pressure. We embed service into the fabric of our program. We go out into the community and we do good work together.

A Broader Approach to Recovery

While we embrace what the 12 Steps offer, our program is not exclusively 12-Step. We are holistic and adaptive in our approach — meeting each person where they are and helping them build a recovery that is genuinely their own. Some clients come in ready to work the steps. Others need to understand more about their condition first, or are coming from backgrounds where the language of the program does not initially resonate. We work with all of them.

What we are not adaptive about is the core belief that runs through everything we do at Above All Else Recovery: that recovery is spiritual work, that it requires honesty, that it cannot happen in isolation, and that doing good in the world, being of service, showing up for others, building a life of meaning and genuine connection, is both the result of recovery and one of its most reliable causes.
