Our Men's Program at Above All Else Recovery

Addiction in men often follows a specific and recognizable pattern: years of managing their struggles, pushing through challenges, self-medicating, and projecting a version of strength that has little to do with genuine wellness, until everything finally falls apart. The men who come to Above All Else Recovery typically carry more than others realize, and for some, this burden has been carried for a very long time.

We offer residential drug and alcohol treatment for men in Costa Mesa, California. Our 20-bed detox and residential program is intentionally small, allowing for an intimate environment where each person is known, supported, and held accountable. In this setting, the sense of community becomes a powerful force for change rather than just a background element of the program.

What Men Need From Treatment

Men often find it challenging to express vulnerability in mixed-gender settings. They tend to manage their image, hold back feelings they perceive as unsafe to share, and maintain a low-level performance that hinders genuine self-examination necessary for recovery. In a men’s program, with the right culture and the right staff, a different dynamic can emerge. Defenses come down more quickly, honesty runs deeper, and the connections formed among men engaging in meaningful work together possess a unique quality, they are direct, earned, and enduring.

Above All Else Recovery fosters that environment. We provide a space where men can stop pretending and start addressing the real work of recovery. This entails the internal journey of understanding the factors that led to their addiction, recognizing the costs involved, and discovering their true selves beneath years of using, managing, and surviving.

Our Program For Men

Medically Supervised Detox

A safe, medically supervised withdrawal from drugs and alcohol is the first essential step in our program. Our detox process is fully integrated with our residential treatment, ensuring a seamless transition from detox to ongoing care. This means that our team, who are already familiar with the client, will support them throughout the process. There are no transfers between facilities and no gaps in care.

Our residential program offers the essential structure, community, and daily therapeutic experiences necessary for early recovery. Clients reside on-site and take part in both individual and group programming, engage in community activities, and begin to rebuild the daily habits and connections that create a solid foundation for a sober life.
We are inherently experiential. Our program incorporates physical activities, outings, community service, and shared daily rituals into its rhythm. We believe that men heal through action—by rebuilding competence, connection, and purpose in tangible, meaningful ways. This belief is reflected in our program.
For many men, addiction has disrupted their connection to what once gave their lives meaning, such as a sense of purpose, a value system, or the feeling of being part of something larger than themselves. We take the spiritual dimension of recovery seriously, but we do not prescribe a single path. Instead, we create a space for men to engage in inner work in a way that feels authentic to them.
We believe in the power of 12-Step communities for those who are open to them. We attend AA and NA meetings as a group, provide transportation, and support clients in building relationships with the broader recovery community in Costa Mesa and Orange County. 12-Step participation is not mandatory, but it is genuinely encouraged and supported.
We do not recover in isolation. Community work, shared meals, group outings, and the simple daily experience of living alongside other men who are doing the same hard work are among the most powerful therapeutic forces in this program. We go out into the community together. We serve. We build the habits of a life that is worth living.

Life After Above All Else

Our goal is not just sobriety. It is a life that a man actually wants to live, a life built on real self-knowledge, genuine connection, and the daily habits and practices that sustain wellness over the long haul. We help men begin building that life here, and we connect them with the resources and community they need to keep building it after they leave.
